The Yungang Grottoes was originally known as the Mount Wuzhou cave temples . It is a grandiose project which marshaled the full resources of the country in the Northern Wei Dynasty .It is located on the southern part of Wuzhou Mountain and the northern bank of Ten-miles River which are about sixteen kilometers west of Datong City, Shanxi Province. The grottoes extend about one kilometer from east to the west and were built down the hillside. The 254 grottoes consist of 45 major caves and more than 56000 sculptures.Representing the highest level of world carving art in the Fifth Century, the Yungang Grottoes is considered to be exemplary Chinese Buddhist art work at its finest.
